That Time of Year

It’s that time of the year. You know the one I mean. We are all looking forward to enjoying time off work for one of the most well-known global public holidays; loving (or hating) the gift-giving that is ahead of us; loving (hating or somewhere in between) the many decorations and joyous music that abounds as we go through shopping centres.

It’s that time of year where we look back on the year that was. We’re not yet at the stage of considering the new year … there’s a good amount of days still ahead of us for that.

So, as it’s that time of the year, I have commenced in my cogitation about what was. I lost my mum this past year. At ninety years old, she had certainly lived a full life. Mamma was a bigger than life character and I don’t know anyone who had a bad word to say about her. Me and my sisters and many others too will miss her. Sei sempre con me, Mamma.

I also lost a treasured dog, Zeta, who had been with us for almost ten years. She was a slightly troubled dog. Abused as a puppy, we got her from an animal welfare centre. She was mistrustful and jittery in the beginning, but she turned out to be one of the most loyal and loving dogs we have ever had.

Other things that stand out for me, as it is that time of the year (!), is the enjoyment my husband and I had on an overseas trip. I’m uncertain when we will go again, as travelling seems to be more complicated nowadays. There are just so many people at airports, train stations, and hotels; the sheer quantity means waiting around a lot … and I’ve never been a patient person!

Financially, of course, overseas travel is a tremendous expense and always seems to be a consideration, now more than ever.

And talking about finances or less of them, another ticket item is my husband’s retirement. Yes, he is a ‘kept man’ as I am now the sole breadwinner. Thankfully, living in this country of opportunity, we can afford this work status change and Gerald is certainly enjoying his freedom!

So, as I ponder on things, for that time of the year is now upon us, I can truly say it has been pretty full on! A mix of downs and ups and somewhere in between.

But now it is time to look ahead. May you all enjoy the love and joy of another festive season that is upon us.

Much love and merriness … Buon Natale! #mothers #pets #travel
